CORNWALL RIGS GROUP - getting involved

You can become involved in the group in a number of different ways, such as:

If you care about conserving Cornwall’s geology and landscape, register your interest immediately.

Support the talks/walks in the Events programme – they are free unless otherwise stated, and you are always welcome. Register for updates.

Report any threats or actual damage to geological sites (particularly SSSI’s and RIGS/ County Geological Sites) you see. A photograph speaks volumes.

Temporary exposures, due to building or other works reveal geology not seen before. Flag it up to us. Try and take a photograph.

Propose a site that you think should be conserved. The Crousa Gravels RIGS was proposed by a local community.

Photographing County Geology Sites.
Only a third of sites have photos and many of these are just snapshots rather than showing particular features or site boundaries. Pictures of the site interest for the purposes of locating the site interest and monitoring site condition, especially annotated pictures, are invaluable. We need volunteers with previous geological field experience and an ability to work independently, to photograph County Geology Sites.

Venton Cove
Part of the Venton Cove County Geology Site, annotated to show the features of interest.

For those with less geological experience but familiarity with annotating software, we have a large number of photos, that still need annotation and many that need labelling.

Educational Sites.
Cornwall, with its rich and varied geological and geomorphological heritage offers excellent opportunities for interpretation and educational use. Cornwall RIGS is keen to develop the educational side of RIGS. We need volunteers to research the National Curriculum and higher education syllabuses and use this information to reassess the educational potential of our current sites.

Website.
The web is an extremely effective means of promoting Cornwall's geology and the work of the Cornwall RIGS Group. Our website needs updating/revamping. This will involve review and development of its style and content and updating of information currently on it. With the newly computerised RIGS database there are opportunities to publish the results of analysis of our current sites etc. We are looking for a volunteer webmaster to lead other volunteers in this task.

Sites Monitoring.
Many sites need a monitoring visit to assess the condition of the site interest, access etc. We need someone with previous geological field experience to undertake this task. We also need someone to take on special responsibility for the Caradon District of Cornwall. This “District Correspondent” would ideally live in Caradon, and be willing to become a member of the RIGS Committee, taking the lead on District-based issues.

1 Site Clearance.
Volunteers are needed to attend work parties to clear vegetation at various sites. Countybridge Quarry on the Lizard, with its overgrown Lizard Loess Type-section is the most urgent and has to be undertaken this current year.

1 Professional geologists, geomorphologists, petrologists, palaeontologists, pedologists - retired, change of life style, or whatever, want to keep your hand in? Attend the next Committee meeting to explore how you can help. Contact us to find out more.
